Secretary of State for Tourism visits “Hotel do Castelo”, a sustainable project by the Algarveresorts Group

There is a strong focus on energy and water efficiency, which extends to gardens and gray water

The Secretary of State for Tourism visited, on the 31st of July, the “Hotel do Castelo”, currently under construction by the family group Algarveresorts, located in Sesmarias, Albufeira.

The objective of Pedro Machado's visit was, according to the hotel group, «to highlight the innovative and sustainable solutions that are being implemented in this enterprise, which aims to become an example of energy self-sufficiency in the hotel sector, as early as June 2025 ».

With interior design by Nini Andrade Silva, the “Hotel do Castelo” will be «a model of sustainability, designed to achieve almost 100% energy efficiency», adds the note.

To this end, several measures will be implemented, namely Energy Efficiency: the project includes construction systems with high thermal efficiency, 300 kW of photovoltaic panels that generate more than 80% of the energy required for the hotel's operation, batteries with storage capacity of 1 MW, heat pumps with an efficiency 4,5 times higher than traditional water heaters, in addition to home automation systems to optimize energy consumption.

The measures also include Water Resources management: to reduce water consumption, a gray water treatment system was installed that reuses around 60% of water from showers and washbasins, using it for irrigation and toilet flushing.

On the other hand, the choice of tree species and exterior arrangements was planned to minimize water use, taking into account the arid characteristics of the Algarve region.

During the visit, Secretary of State Pedro Machado praised the efforts of the Algarveresorts Group in promoting sustainable practices in the hotel sector, highlighting the positive impact that “Hotel do Castelo” will have on the local economy and sustainable tourism in the region.
