Portimonense, returning to the II Football League, drew away against Felgueiras today, in the official debut of coach Sérgio Vieira and in the only goalless match of the opening day of the 2024/25 edition of the competition.

The new coach of the Algarve, who maintained the focus on the “3-4-3” scheme that his predecessor Paulo Sérgio used to use, added two reinforcements to the starting eleven – central Kelechi John and winger Paulo Vítor –, in addition to central Feliciano , former under-23, and winger Rui Gomes, returning from loan to Tondela.

At the FC Vizela Stadium, home loaned to the Felgueiras team, which has its venue under construction, the host team, returning to the second tier 19 years later, had a better first half, with a clear ascendancy and more goal opportunities than the Algarve, considered candidates for the climb.

Rui Gomes even wasted the first opportunity of the game, in the first minute, but goalkeeper Vinicius Silvestre – who starts the season as a starter for the “alvinegros”, to the detriment of the Japanese Nakamura – had to intervene more times, particularly in throws by Théo Fonseca (10 and 26 minutes) and Landinho (41).

After the break, the same tone remained – Kelechi John (56) and Feliciano (58) avoided two goals with decisive cuts –, which led the Portimonense coach to make changes, to rebalance the match.

Faced with a very dull Portimonense team that practically created no danger in the second half, Felgueiras gained new momentum in the final minutes, but also failed to successfully target the Algarve goal, remaining goalless until the final whistle.

The two teams end the first round of the II League in the group of seventh placed, all with one point.
