Regulations were published yesterday in the Official Gazette

The classification and respective regulations of the Local Natural Reserve of Foz do Almargem and Trafal, in Loulé, were published yesterday, August 14th, in the Diário da República.

This is, for the Municipality of Loulé, «another step to make its contribution to the environmental safeguard of the Planet and the protection of biodiversity».

The area is located in the parish of Quarteira and is crossed by two streams, – the Fonte Santa or Almargem stream and the Carcavai stream.

According to the municipality of Loulé, «it constitutes one of the important wetlands in the Algarve and is home to a great diversity of fauna species, with 329 species already identified, as well as at least 236 species of flora, with 18 species of interest to conservation or high heritage value”.

With the creation of this Local Natural Reserve, the Municipality of Loulé fulfills the objectives of “improving the state of conservation of natural heritage, promoting the recognition of the value of natural heritage, encouraging the appropriation of natural values and biodiversity and the recent approval of the Law of Nature Restoration which aims to recover at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050."

This will be followed, in the near future, by the preparation of the Management Plan, which will consist of a participatory process between all interested parties (owners, local actors, associations, entities…).

At the moment, around 63,8% of the surface of the municipality of Loulé is classified according to the National System of Classified Areas (SNAC).
