Algarve basketball players celebrate qualification for the Under-19 World Cup

Portugal beat Hungary and came 5th in the European Championship

The Portuguese women's under-18 basketball team, with three Algarve players in the starting five, today secured qualification for the 19 Under-2025 World Cup, by finishing the European Championship in 5th place.

With a victory over Hungary, 69-63, in Matosinhos, Portugal achieved the best result ever in continental championships at this level and secured a place in the competition that will take place next year in the Czech Republic.

After a balanced first period, Hungary demonstrated greater defensive intensity in the second period and went into the break with an eight-point lead (42-34).

Despite the Portuguese reaction after the break, the Hungarians continued to lead, with a difference of eight points in favor (63-55) with 3.34 minutes to go. With the help of the public, Portugal recorded an impressive 14-0 run and celebrated the triumph.

Clara Silva from Faro was the best Algarve player on the field, with 14 points, five rebounds, one assist, one block and one shot tackle.

Leonor Peixinho from Lagos scored five points, three rebounds and a steal, and Madalena Amaro from Faro scored four points and one rebound.
