Goalkeeper Matilde Rosa, who represented the Algarve club Gil Eanes, from Lagos, is a reinforcement for Benfica's women's handball team, with a two-season contract, the Lisbon club announced.
«The 19-year-old handball player signed for Benfica until 2026, after shining in the U20 World Championship for the Portugal team», revealed the “reds”, in a statement published on their official website.
Matilde Rosa, born in Lagos, confessed, in statements to BTV, how important it was for her to be able to sign for her favorite club.
«Signing for Benfica means a lot to me. It's a great club that I have a lot of affection for. I'm a Benfica fan and have been following the club since I was little. I had the ambition of being at Benfica for some time. It’s a dream come true and a big step I’m taking,” he said.
Matilde Rosa promised to give her all in every game in the 2024/25 season, in which three-time champions Benfica want to stay on the winning track.
«Benfica fans can expect me to give my best in every game, whatever the situation. And my goals for next season are to be able to give Benfica all the titles we can win, and to be able to evolve individually,” he said.
This is the second exit among the most highly rated players of Gil Eanes, from Lagos, which previously saw Portuguese full-back and international Carmen Figueiredo, born in Tavira, reinforce CB Elche, the defeated finalist in the last edition of the Spanish first division.
Matilde Rosa and Carmen Figueiredo were part of the Portuguese team that guaranteed, 16 years later, qualification for the 2024 European Championship, which takes place from November 28th to December 15th in Austria, Hungary and Switzerland.
