Summer in Tavira is back from Saturday, July 6th. Until the end of September, the city wants to be the center of cultural dissemination, of the Portuguese language, of the arts and of material, immaterial and environmental cultural heritage. This year, it also includes the Celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution in its programming, with several shows on the theme.
The 18th edition of Cenas na Rua – International Festival of Theater and Arts on the Street is the initiative that opens this summer in Tavira, between the 6th and 14th of July.
Taking place throughout the city, Cenas na Rua features artistic proposals and award-winning shows in the areas of contemporary dance, theater, new circus, poetry, humor, music and multidisciplinary, coming from various parts of the world.
From Spain comes the contemporary and suspended dance of Maitane Sarralde, “Desanuda”, “La crisis de la imagination”, by Rauxa Cia, “Só” by Xampatito Pato and “Maestrissimo”, by Pagagnini II Yllana.
From Italy, Juriy Longhi brings “Bubble Street Cirkus” and from France, Compagnie Bivouac treats the public with “Perceptions”.
Three Portuguese projects also stand out in this edition, with Teatro das Beiras presenting “O Juiz da Beira”, by Gil Vicente, Mãozorra and “A Viagem” and the project around the poetry “A Secreta Vida das Palavras”, by the artists Mafalda Veiga, Lavoisier and Catarina Munhá.
The program continues with another Jazz cycle in Tavira, with four shows from the 18th to the 21st of July, at Praça da República.
On July 18th, the Hot Club Jazz Orchestra joins Mozambican artist Selma Uamusse to recreate the piece “Black, Brown and Beige”, by Duke Ellington.
The following day, July 19th, it will be Tavira's Desidério Lázaro's turn to take the stage in the company of Mimi Froes.
On the 20th, the project “Margem”, by Maria Carvalho Quinteto, pays homage to José Mário Branco.
The cycle ends on July 21st, with Júlio Resende and his new show “Fado Jazz – Sons of the Revolution”.
The Parque do Palácio da Galeria will have its usual summer program. On the 24th of July, Sérgio Godinho & Assessores “LIBERDADE25” invite A Garota Não and, on the 7th of August, David Fonseca, presents “Still 25 ”.
On August 21st, Cristina Branco's concert will take place, with her latest album “Mãe”.
Tickets for the shows will be on sale at the Summer information stand in Tavira, located at Praça da República (daily, between 20pm and midnight), at Palácio da Galeria, from Tuesday to Saturday, during the period when it is open to the public or on the same day, at the show's box office.
They can also be purchased at the BOL online ticket office, with the exception of David Fonseca, which can be purchased at Ticketline.
From July 25th to September 1st, Praça da República becomes the stage for a vast program in the field of eclectic, diverse and inclusive music, with emphasis on local and regional projects, as well as references in Portuguese music and across borders. current affairs, dance and folklore.
On this stage, the national projects Anónimos de Abril will be shown with Rogério Charraz, Joana Alegre, João Afonso and José Fialho Gouveia, Teresinha Landeiro, Kumpania Algazarra, Iolanda, Ritual Tejo, among others. At a regional level, the presence of the Orquestra do Algarve and the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve stands out.
It will also be a space for the promotion of Tavira projects Poetas Candados, OSMOSE, NAMLESS, GIGGY and the Tavira Musical Band.
In terms of dance, the stage hosts dance from the Dance Classes of the Tavira Music Academy, Cia D Dance, folklore with the Ranchos de Tavira, Luz de Tavira and Santo Estevão, the Popular Music Group Pérolas do Gilão and the Grupo of Cantares de Cachopo. Another highlight is the celebration of Santiago Day, by the União das Freguesias de Tavira, with a Lucky Duckies show.
Also passing through Praça da República are Alma de Coimbra, Cape Verdean Cremilda Medina, Galician UXIA and Vitor Zamora y Sexteto Cuba, coming from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
There will also be another Lyric Gala, with TNSCarlos musicians performing works by Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Bernstein among others.
From July 16th to August 27th, once a week, Fado no Coreto showcases several local artists in Jardim do Coreto.
Cinema also features prominently in this program, with another edition of the “Tavira Outdoor Cinema Exhibition”, from July 18th to August 18th, at the Cloisters of Convento do Carmo – an organization of the Cineclube de Tavira.
In other parishes of the municipality, cinema arrives through Cinemalua – Associação Cultural, which offers open-air cinema sessions, with the cycle “Bons Filmes de Semper”.
Summer is also synonymous with several themed fairs, which are returning to Rua do Cais, redeveloped and opened in June.
Between the 12th and 15th of July, an organization of the Associação Cegos por Provas, with the support of the Municipality of Tavira, the wine and gastronomic initiative takes place Tavira: The Wine Days.
With around 40 exhibitors, this fair aims to showcase several/different varieties of national and Tavira wines, through tastings and other initiatives.
Between July 18th and August 4th, the 28th edition of the Tavira Book Fair will take place, which will feature around 40 exhibitors. The program includes launches and presentations of new editions, as well as conversations with authors.
ASTA – Associação de Artes e Sabores de Tavira also organizes another Crafts Fair, between the 7th and 15th of August, whose objective is to promote crafts, sweets and associated techniques, from the municipality of Tavira, with the participation of invited exhibitors. of the region and Alentejo.
From the 17th to the 25th of August, another edition of the Tavira Antiques and Junk Fair will also take place, a privileged space for collectors and decoration lovers to acquire rarities and unique pieces.
The Association for the Integrated Development of Baixa de Tavira – UAC organizes the Stock Fair between August 28th and September 01st, in collaboration with several associated commercial spaces in the city.
The Craft Shows, an organization of the Tavira ASTA, Almadrava and Albacora Associations, are back and take place weekly, between July 1st and October 2nd. The chosen places are Praça Dr António Padinha (Jardim da Alagoa), on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and Jardim das Palmeiras on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
At the Tavira Municipal Museum/ Palácio da Galeria, the exhibitions “Mediterranean Diet – Millennial Cultural Heritage” and “BALSA, Roman City” can be visited.
Still at the Municipal Museum of Tavira, several performances of the play “What remains of us”, by Tavira actor Vitor Correia, are planned.
At the Atalaia Barracks, the exhibition by photojournalist Alfredo Cunha “April 25, 1974, Thursday” remains on view.
The Islamic Center of the Municipal Museum of Tavira has its permanent exhibition “Tavira Islâmica”, which features the most emblematic pieces from the Islamic period found underground in the city of Tavira.
In the field of digital art, the Zer0 Museum presents, from July to September, an installation at the Ermida de São Roque.
On the other hand, from July 13th to September 14th, the Asturians Estúdio Rotor bring “A Onda”, which combines the use of salt, so typical of Tavira, with programmed light modules generated by the movement of sea waves, shown in video.
