Lagoa launches work that will increase the capacity of the Sesmarias Reservoir tenfold

This will be one of the “most important works in the area of water efficiency” in the municipality

Work has already begun to requalify the Sesmarias Reservoir, in Lagoa, one of the “most important interventions in the area of water efficiency, which will allow the water storage capacity to be increased from 600 to 6 cubic meters (m680), in addition to equip the reservoir with modern and updated technology», according to the Lagoa Chamber.

This work, budgeted at 2 million and 500 thousand euros and with an estimated duration of 365 days, includes «the demolition of the two cells supported with 250 m³ each and 1 cell of 100 m³, as well as the construction of two new ones with capacity of 3 m³ each, connected to each other through a maneuvering chamber to be built and the diversion of the ducts to Boavista and Mato Serrão to the main road».

«It also aims to provide this infrastructure with electrical and electromechanical equipment adapted to the current reality, namely, electromagnetic flow meters, ultrasonic and hydrostatic level meters, floating level floats, pressure transmitters, sodium hypochlorite dosers, water monitoring system residual chlorine/pH, install LED luminaires and also, the installation of pumping groups with electrical panel and the installation of an Emergency Generator Group», added the Câmara de Lagoa.

The Sesmarias Reservoir, which was built in the 60s, «covers an area of influence that includes the areas of Carvoeiro, Mato Serrão and Sesmarias. Given the age of the pipelines that supply this infrastructure, as well as the small amount of reserves compared to the supplied area, supply failures occur frequently with times of up to 12 hours».

«Thus, with the replacement of the Sesmarias pipeline, with the ongoing project, and with the requalification of the Sesmarias Reservoir, increasing the reserve capacity and providing it with technology capable of predicting ruptures, it is expected that the problem of interruption of water supply, in that area of the municipality, will stop happening», highlighted the Chamber.

With the increase in storage capacity, «even if a rupture occurs, the Sesmarias Reservoir will be prepared to continue supplying all locations, as it will have autonomy for more than 24 hours».

«This is a work of extreme importance for the municipality, in terms of water efficiency. It will allow the water supply to no longer be cut whenever there is a break. In addition to avoiding the embarrassment of cutting water, it will reduce water loss», said Luís Encarnação, president of the Lagoa Chamber.
