More than 13 thousand students from Portimão participated in the Civil Protection program

In the next academic year, the SMPC of Portimão will maintain the municipal awareness program “School and Risks… Prepare to Protect!”

More than 13 thousand students from Portimão participated, throughout this academic year, in the municipal awareness program “School and Risks… Prepare to Protect!”, within the scope of Civil Protection.

In addition to awareness raising activities in public and private schools in the municipality of Portimão, there were study visits to the Fire Department barracks, where the Portimão Municipal Emergency and Civil Protection Center is located.

Activity implemented by the Municipal Civil Protection Service (SMPC) of Portimão in 2014, and which has been a success throughout, in the current academic year 229 awareness-raising actions were carried out, covering more than 13 thousand students and around 600 teaching and non-teaching staff, from pre-school to secondary education, and from public to private education.

The awareness raising actions carried out were adapted to each level of education, covering aspects such as the use of the number 112, calls for help, dangerous materials, natural and technological risks in the region, basic life support, iron risks, roads and the defense of the forest against fires, without forgetting the carrying out of exercises in some schools.

For the success of this project, the SMPC counted on the support of the Forestry Technical Office and the Municipality's Forestry Sappers Team, the Portimão Fire Department, the Portuguese Red Cross and Infrastructures of Portugal, as well as the Public Security Police, Republican National Guard and National Maritime Authority, aiming to raise awareness and train students for greater resilience and response capacity, if faced with any adverse situation.

In terms of full-scale exercises, the participation in the International Exercise NEAMWave'23 and in the 11th edition of the national exercise “A Terra Treme” are worth highlighting.

On November 6, 2023, through the International Exercise NEAMWave'23, the response to the possible activation of the early warning system for tsunamis was tested, with the real-time evacuation of 95 extras (students from Escola Básica e Secundária da Bemposta and Escola Básica e Secundária da Bemposta and Escola Secundária Poeta António Aleixo) in Praia da Rocha and its relocation to a Concentration and Irradiation Zone (ZCI).

On the 14th of November, participation in the 11th edition of the national exercise “A Terra Treme”, which took place in most schools in the municipality, included face-to-face monitoring by members of the SMPC and the Portimão Fire Department in the actions taken to carried out by Escola Básica e Secundária da Bemposta, Escola Básica 2,3 Professor José Buísel, Escola Básica da Pedra Mourinha and Escola Básica da Coca-Maravilhas, where more than 2500 participants were involved.

In the next academic year, the SMPC of Portimão will maintain the municipal awareness program “School and Risks… Prepare to Protect!”.
