Another gold medal for Castores do Arade

Norberto Mourão, paracanoeist from Kayak Clube Castores do Arade, from Lagoa, became European champion this Sunday, in the adapted VL2 200m class, at the European Speed Championship held in Szeged, Hungary.

On track six, the Portuguese athlete finished his performance in 55,455 seconds, beating the Ukrainian Andrii Kryvchun, second placed, by 0,150 seconds and the Hungarian Robert Suba, third, by 0,316.

Norberto Mourão thus managed to regain his title won in 2021, after losing in the last two years to Hungarian athlete Robert Suba.

Bronze at the Tokyo2020 Paralympic Games, Norberto Mourão had also been European champion in 2021, and bronze in 2019 and 2022.

According to a note from Castores do Arade, «Norberto Mourão trains regularly in Rio Arade with the Paralympic Games as his main objective, with the focus of repeating the podium in Tokyo».

This was the second European title won in Hungary by the Lagoa club's canoeists, after, on Friday, Iago Bebiano and Kevin Santos won the K2 200m final.

Nuno Silva, responsible for Kayak Clube Castores do Arade, highlights that «Kevin Santos and Iago Bebiano are already preparing a new crew for the next Olympic Games, Los Angeles 2028, the K4 500m».

At this European Championship, the pair who did their first race in K4 500m, «with Iago leading the team, achieved 10th place with a time of 1.21.882».

«The talent is there and they are one second away from fighting for medals. In the coming years, we hope to have great joy with this team that still has a lot of training to do together», adds Nuno Silva.

«The municipality of Lagoa has unconditionally supported the Castores do Arade project, there are many athletes who train daily, the great results are the tip of a large iceberg, many hours of training, many athletes shared their training and dreams, but , most do not make it to the national team and very few make it to medals. However, everyone helped and contributed to these achievements», concludes the person responsible for the Algarve club.
