Loulé Chamber creates Local Natural Reserve of Foz do Almargem and Trafal

All that remains is discussion and approval in the Municipal Assembly and publication in the Diário da República

The Loulé City Council approved, at its meeting this Monday, June 3rd, the Management Regulations for the future Local Natural Reserve of Foz do Almargem and Trafal, thus bringing the classification process of this new area into “the final stretch”. protected.

Now follows the submission for approval of these two documents by the Municipal Assembly, culminating the process with the publication of the creation of the area in the Diário da República.

According to the municipality, «this classification aims to grant a legal status of protection appropriate to the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem services and geological heritage, as well as the enhancement of the landscape».

This Reserve covers an area of around 135 hectares, constituting one of the important wetlands in the Algarve.

The natural wealth (home to at least 236 species of flora, 11 natural and semi-natural habitats and more than 322 species of fauna) makes this area of special importance for the balance of the ecosystem, which is why the municipality decided to “take on management of this area framed within its environmental and climate change adaptation policy”.

On the other hand, «considering that this is an area subject to great urban pressure, this legal classification reinforces the municipality's position to stop real estate growth in sensitive natural areas of the Algarve coast», adds the Chamber.

«This decision once again proves the Municipality's commitment and commitment to the promotion and preservation of biodiversity, conservation of natural values and enhancement of the territory, taking into account the increasingly pressing challenges related to climate change», highlights the president from Loulé City Council, Vítor Aleixo.

The creation of this Reserve, as well as the proposed Regulation, were the subject of public discussion, between July 6th and August 17th, 2022. In total, 67 statements were received, which were “recorded, analyzed and considered, giving rise to reports, available on the Participa Portal”.

The approval of this classification in a council session is one of the initiatives included in the celebrations of World Environment Day, which will be celebrated this Wednesday, June 5th, reveals the municipality.

There will also be other activities, including “Bird Watching”, for families, taking place in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, on the 8th of June, as well as the actions of the Environmental Center “Project Little Beings, Great Discoveries” (4 , June 5th and 6th), “Birding the Future: Birds at Fonte Benémola” (June 5th and 6th), “Coastwatch” Project (June 6th), “The hidden life in Tide Pools” (June 6th) and “Nature at the Service of All” (June 6).
