A delegation from the University of Algarve, led by Paulo Águas, rector of UAlg, made an official visit to the Hassan I University of Settat (UH1), in Morocco, on the 9th and 10th of May, to strengthen the relations it already has with this university. institution, but also to think about new collaborations.
According to the Algarve university, the visit, carried out at the invitation of Abdellatif Moukrim, rector of UH1, «aimed at analyzing hypotheses for the development of joint teaching and research activities, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence».
“Areas of biological sciences, health and sport were also considered, in addition to collaboration with the implementation of the degree in Iberian languages that begins in Settat, in September 2024”.
In addition to meetings with the rector and vice-rectors of Hassan I University, the delegation met with the directors of the faculties of Science and Technology, Economics, and Legal Sciences, and the institutes of Health and Sports, where The person responsible for doctoral training at UH1 was also present.
The UAlg delegation was received by the mayors and the person responsible for the Settat municipal council and also visited the innovation and technology transfer center.
In addition to continuing the work already underway, bilateral work meetings were scheduled to be held in June, regarding postgraduate training and research in artificial intelligence, as well as meetings between the directors of the Science and Technology faculties of both universities .
It was also agreed that UAlg students will be present at an inter-university sporting competition event that Hassan I University organizes annually, at the beginning of May, named after the crown prince of the kingdom of Morocco.
During the visit last week, the Algarve delegation participated in the final medal ceremony, «with the rector of UAlg receiving similar protocol treatment to the rectors of the Moroccan universities present».
UAlg's relations with Hassan I University are close to 15 years old, «having been initiated by rector João Guerreiro with the implementation of research projects on university governance and on the evaluation of research qualities».
«All projects have involved several other Moroccan universities, and Hassan I has always played a leading role in strengthening bilateral relations. The creation and installation of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities at Hassan I University, in 2016, was sponsored, by agreement, by the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at UAlg, with director Manuel Célio Conceição», according to UAlg.
Accompanied by the rector Paulo Águas, the vice-rector for Transfer, Innovation and Digital University, João Rodrigues, the director of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Carlos Guerrero, and Manuel Célio Conceição, professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, who coordinates a European project on alternating training with several Moroccan universities and was one of the promoters of the meeting, held at UAlg, in May 2023, between the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities and the Council of Rectors of Moroccan Universities.
In the end, the rector of UAlg made a very positive assessment of this trip “which allowed us to reinforce existing relations and renew the cooperation agenda in a neighboring country with enormous potential”.
