Misericórdia workers are on strike today

Workers want career advancement and salary increases

Workers from the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas and Santas Casas de Misericórdia are on strike today in protest for the enhancement of their careers and salary increases.

The strike was called by the Union of Commercial, Office and Services Workers of Portugal (CESP), which also organizes, at 14 pm, a rally in front of the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security, in Lisbon.

In a statement, the union explains that the strike stems from the refusal, by União das Misericórdias Portuguesas, to update the Company Agreement and conclude a collective employment contract for Santas Casas de Misericórdia.

«These two blocks to negotiations with CESP have increasingly resulted in the professional devaluation of thousands of workers», they justify.

Workers at União das Misericórdias Portuguesas contest the intention of valuing seniority through a salary increase of five euros every five years and state, as an example, that workers with a 30-year career would have a salary increase of just 30 euros compared to a colleague at the beginning of his career.

On the other hand, the union accuses União das Misericórdias of denying Santas Casas workers rights guaranteed by the ordinance extending the collective employment contract of private social solidarity institutions.

The Institutions of the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas received 145 million euros more than in 2022 — 11% more than in the previous year, and retroactive to January. We demand respect”, highlights CESP.
