Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left this message at the ceremony in which he presented the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe 2023

The President of the Republic today called for the fight for democracy and human dignity, stating that “it will have to be won”, in the face of attacks on these values across the world, including on the European continent.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left this message at the ceremony in which he presented the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe 2023 to Moroccan human rights activist Amina Bouayach and the Global Campus of Human Rights university network, in the Senate Room of the Assembly of the Republic.

According to the head of state, distinguishing the work of these two award winners “is recognizing that there continues to be space for defending the values of the Council of Europe”.

"It is recognizing that, despite attacks on these values all over the world, including on our continent, the fight for democracy and human dignity is not lost and will have to be won", he stated.

«We can all contribute to the project of a better world. Let's not waste this opportunity. More than an appeal of this time, it is a life mission», added the President of the Republic.

In his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that, after the 25th of April 1974, the consolidation of Portuguese democracy had “the invaluable support of the Council of Europe – which, not by chance, Portugal joined through the hand of Mário Soares soon at the end of 1976».

«Even during the revolution and the work of the Constituent Assembly, a delegation from the same Constituent Assembly visited the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe – a delegation of which I had the honor of being the youngest deputy», he recalled.

The head of state considered that, since then, «the Council of Europe, which marks 75 years of life, has known how to adapt and evolve to respond to continuous challenges, in Europe and beyond», and that «today with a war of aggression across the European continent and a complex and dramatic situation in the Middle East, its role is even more important».
