Investment in research and development (R&D) in the Algarve increased by 30% between 2019 and 2022, according to data now released by the Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC).

According to the report IPCTN22: Research and Development (R&D): main indicators by region, published yesterday, investment in R&D in the Algarve represents 0,47% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) generated in the region, the highest value in recent years.

In 2019, investment in R&D was 41 million euros, 0,41% as a percentage of regional GDP, representing companies 0,11%. In 2022, consolidated investment in R&D reached 54 m, the aforementioned 0,47% of GDP generated in the region.

There was also an increase in terms of R&D staff and researchers, with 1,157,9 Full-Time Equivalents (FTE), corresponding to 5,2% of the active population, in the year 2022, compared to 1.044,4 FTE , 4,7% of the active population, in 2021.

For José Apolinário, president of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), «it is necessary to reinforce investment in research and development in the region, especially in the transfer of knowledge to and with companies, bringing together the various entities, with a role key to the University of Algarve, the associated and collaborative laboratories, the areas of the sea, health and sustainable development, also reinforcing the role of the Mediterranean Diet, aiming to exceed 60 million euros in R&D investment by 2024».
