The Food Bank's campaign against Hunger collected 1.755 tons of food this weekend from more than 2.000 commercial areas in the country, the social solidarity institution said today.

The results of the collection represent «an increase in relation to the value of the same campaign last year, on a weekend marked by the coincidence with various activities, such as the Football Cup final, concerts, burning of ribbons, thus confirming both the solidarity of Portuguese people, or renewed confidence in food banks against hunger», reads a statement from the entity.

«In times of great anxiety and some uncertainty like the ones we are experiencing, it fills our hearts to see that values as essential as solidarity and active civic participation remain firm and unchanged in the Portuguese», stated the president of the Portuguese Federation of Banks Food Against Hunger (FPBACF) Isabel Jonet, cited in the statement.

The food collected will be distributed in «more than 2.400 social solidarity institutions, which deliver it to around 360 people with proven food needs», the note also reads.

In addition to this in-person campaign, which saw the participation of around 40 thousand volunteers, it will also be possible to contribute, until June 2nd, through vouchers available in supermarkets or on the electronic platform available at

Last year, the 21 operational food banks against hunger distributed 25,75 thousand tons of food, with an estimated global value of more than 39,4 million euros.
