Armação de Pêra shows the best of its culture and gastronomy at the Caldeirada Festival

This Sunday, the 26th, is still the day to go to the Festival in Armação de Pêra

Thirteen restaurants invited residents and tourists to try the typical Algarve stew, Silves wine and orange desserts, on the first day of the 25th Caldeirada e do Mar Festival, in Armação de Pêra. The event ends this Sunday, May 26th, always with the focus on the stew.

“O Silvense” and the “O Casarão” grill were some of the restaurants that served the first stews for the most curious… and those with a sweet tooth. But, as happens every year, there was a presentation of the festival beforehand, with the presence of Rosa Palma, president from Silves City Council, Manuel João, president of the Armação de Pêra Fishermen's Association, and Sofia Belchior, president of the Municipal Assembly.

Soon afterwards, in the auditorium of the Parish Council, the first sea conference adapted for children from the São Bartolomeu de Messines and Silves Schools took place.

Throughout the morning, students had the opportunity to learn about the history of Pedra do Valado, the natural reef located in the bay of Armação de Pêra, which was recently classified as a Marine Natural Park.

But the young students were also able to learn more about fishing, the Algarvensis Geopark, the new Armação de Pêra walkway and, at the end, heard the story “My grandfather's treasure”, produced by Sciaena association. After the story was told, they received the book.

«It's up to the younger people, these young people who are here, to talk to the older people at home, to talk to those who don't know what this Algarvensis Geopark is, what this is about Pedra do Valado, what this sustainability is . Because sustainability only exists if there is inclusion», said Rosa Palma, president of Silves City Council.

«What we want to say is that what we receive from our ancestors, we have a duty to pass on to others. Because our grandparents, our grandparents' friends, thought of us and said that the world is so beautiful that we have no right to ruin it. Because we want to leave the Geopark and Pedra do Valado to whoever comes after us. What we are doing is protecting, not for ourselves, but for those who come after us», added the mayor.

During the afternoon, the Sea Conference took place for the general public, which brought together experts in the field to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the sustainability of the oceans, involving the theme of Pedra do Valado, that is, the recently created Parque Martinho of the Algarve Natural Recife.

This, the first Sea Conference, represented a «unique opportunity to reflect and debate strategies that help face the current challenges of the fishing and tourism sector, promoting the Recife Marine Natural Park in the Algarve as a model of sustainable development».

The conference also served to remember the long and difficult process of classifying Pedra do Valado, which involved the most diverse entities, namely the fishermen themselves.

«It was hard work, which began in 2018 and which today is a classification that we should be proud of, because Pedra do Valado is recognized both locally, by the people who live here, both in the Algarve region and in terms of Portugal and this is a reason to be proud. Due to its importance, we must protect this natural reef and continue the Marine Park project. This is what we want to honor here. And as president of the Chamber, I have this responsibility to allow continuity. This responsibility begins with us and we have to infect others», also highlighted Rosa Palma.

But the main highlight of this Caldeirada and Sea Festival are the dishes with seafood, which everyone can try in the restaurants in Armação de Pêra.

Furthermore, this year there are new features: during the Festival, anyone who tries the menus linked to the sea in participating restaurants is eligible to win prizes, such as four bracelets for free entry to this year's Silves Medieval Fair, four tickets to the Sunset Secret (date chosen by the winner) and four tickets to the theater play “Reopenu a Pensão Luar do Cadoiço”, which will be performed at Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório, on the 21st of September.

There is also a photographic competition, with the publication on Instagram of photographs taken during the event, in Armação de Pêra, alluding to the themes of Sea Gastronomy, Landscapes, Local Community and Fishing.

The winner is in with a chance to win a boat trip for two people to the sea caves. This is a prize offered by the Armação de Pêra Fishermen's Association. The results of the draw will be published on the Municipality of Silves page and on social media.
