The Algarve Food Bank Against Hunger collected this weekend, 25th and 26th May, 113,16 tonnes of food from 110 commercial areas and two warehouses.

As in previous years, the food raised will begin to be distributed this week to 128 social solidarity institutions and around 19751 people with proven food needs will receive hampers or prepared meals.

Nuno Cabrita Alves, president of Banco Alimentar do Algarve, thanked, in his personal name and that of the institution, «all the volunteers who joined this important cause».

Despite the efforts, it is important to remember that «everyone who joins the Algarve Food Bank as volunteers must do so from the heart and only with the aim of helping those who need it most».

The Food Bank also reinforces that, at a time when the inflationary crisis continues to “push” hundreds of families into a situation of poverty, it is important that “the work done in institutions like the Food Bank of the Algarve is taken seriously by everyone” , said the person in charge.

Nuno Cabrita Alves added that «this solidarity campaign was a success, largely because of the donations from everyone who shared their purchases with the Food Bank».

The official also appealed to the need to support the institution "throughout the year".

At the national level, the Food Bank collected 1755 tons of food.

Those who did not have the opportunity to contribute to the Banco Alimentar do Algarve campaign through direct donation of food, can still contribute through the «Ajuda Vale» campaign, until the 2nd of June.

Vouchers will be available at the registers of participating supermarkets, each with a specific barcode for the products you want to donate.

It is also possible to use the “Online” donation portal: www.alimentestaideia.pt throughout the year.
