Algarve Museum Network celebrates 50 years of the 25th of April with the “Liberty Project”

There are activities in 12 of the 16 municipalities in the Algarve

The Algarve Museum Network (RMA) celebrates 50 years of the 25th of April with the presentation of the «Projeto Liberdade», born from the joint desire of its members to articulate and work on a common theme, associating themselves with this important moment history through various projects, forms of expression and activities evocative of the date.

Envisaging initiatives in twelve municipalities in the region, the «Projeto Liberdade» includes a varied set of presentations, conferences, concerts, shows, exhibitions and gatherings, mostly held during the month of April, but some with programs that continue throughout of the year, allowing us to reach different audiences.

The exhibition of drawings made in prison by Álvaro Cunhal, at the Albufeira Municipal Archeology Museum, the gathering «We were in Portimão on the 25th of April», organized by the Friends of the Portimão Museum, the exhibition «Salazar 40 years?», with drawings and caricatures made by archaeologist Cláudio Torres in the 60s, or the collection of testimonies from citizens and institutions, focused on the theme of censorship, in a collaboration between the Municipal Museum of Faro and the District Archive of Faro, work that will form the basis of an exhibition on “Censorship”, are just some of the planned initiatives (see the full program below).

«The concept of Freedom expresses different ways of thinking and being. Ideological, political or philosophical approaches manifest different ways of understanding Freedom», highlights the Algarve Museum Network.

«The way we feel Freedom is relative and inseparable from our temporal, social, cultural and personal context and, if we look for synonyms of the word, we find expressions that, isolated, may even seem antagonistic, such as power, control and right», he adds.

Thus, «because in 2024 we will celebrate 50 years of the achievement of our freedom and democracy, we consider it important that the RMA - Rede de Museus do Algarve and its members associate themselves with this relevant historical moment through different projects, forms of expression and activities evocative of this date».

«In this way, we will express a collective feeling that is so well in line with the spirit and practice of our network work, a notion that has underlying human complementarity, respect for individual freedom and democratic values», adds the RMA.

The first part presents a satirical statement made up of 19 caricatures, written by Professor Augusto Marcelino, professor of visual arts, published immediately after April 25, 1974, in Jornal a República and in Revista Semper Fixe.
The images interpret the development of events experienced at the time, some of them of an international nature, particularly related to external dangers, in their interconnection with post-revolution national events.
In a second part, in audiovisual support, a set of testimonies from people from the municipality of Silves who lived at that time and experienced the historical moments that preceded and went through the April Revolution of 1974, and who agreed to share their memories, are presented.
