Albufeira celebrates April 25th with sculpture and concert by Teresa Salgueiro

Concert will be on the night of the 24th

A sculpture called “Sopro de Liberdade”, a concert by Teresa Salgueiro and a videomapping show are highlights of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, in Albufeira.

The day will begin at 9 am with the official ceremony of raising the flag to the sound of the National Anthem, by the Sociedade Musical e Recreio Popular de Paderne and Guard of Honor by the Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira, followed by the inauguration of the sculpture “Sopro de Abril” by Santos Carvalho.

The artist, who has been developing individual works since 1990, created a unique piece for the Municipality of Albufeira, in Estremoz marble measuring 3.5 meters high, which will be displayed at the entrance to the Chamber.

At 15:00 pm, the Noble Hall hosts the Solemn Session dedicated to Local Power, with interventions from all bench leaders. Afterwards, the book “Um Sopro de Liberdade” will be launched. – Albufeira 1974-2024 – 50 years of April”. This edition brings together several historical facts, focusing on political prisoners in Albufeira during the Estado Novo, as well as testimonies from those who experienced the regime transition in the country.

The night before, Teresa Salgueiro, from Madredeus, will perform at Paços do Concelho, at 21:30 pm, in a concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of April. The show will be accompanied by videomapping and ends with fireworks in honor of Freedom.

The half century of the Carnation Revolution is, moreover, widely celebrated in all public spaces in the Municipality.

In the Municipal Galleries there are the exhibitions “And After Goodbye – Photographs with History” (Galeria de Arte Pintor Samora Barros), until April 29, by Marques Valentim; “Sopro de Liberdade” (Galeria Municipal João Bailote), until May 4th, by the Municipality of Albufeira, “Humberto Delgado – General da Liberdade and Writer” (Cultural Extension Room of the Historical Archive of Albufeira), until May 30th , by prior appointment and also “Prison Drawings” (Municipal Archeology Museum), by Álvaro Cunhal, until August 4th.

On April 20th, the Algarve Jazz Orchestra takes the stage, at 19pm, for the “Liberdades” concert.

On World Book and Copyright Day, on April 23rd, in the Multipurpose Room of the Lídia Jorge Municipal Library, the poetry recital “Words of April: banned words and loose words” will take place, at 21 pm. This intimate journey through Portuguese literature censored during the Estado Novo aims to explore the differences in Freedom of Expression 00 years after the Revolution.

Sport is also part of the program for the 25th of April celebrations. On the 24th, the Caminhadas ao Luar Association organizes the “25th of April Walk”, at 20 pm, departing from Paços do Concelho.

The following day, on the 25th of April, at 9:30 am, the X Triathlon of Albufeira of FC Ferreiras will take place at Praia do Inatel and at 15:00 pm, the “mini” football stars will compete in the 3rd round of the Dolphins Championship, at the Municipal Stadium of Albufeira. The following week, on May 4th, the 2nd Portuguese Women's Road Cycling Cup returns – Carlos Silva e Sousa.
