Spring begins with showers and temperatures above 20 degrees

The Algarve must escape the downpours

Spring begins tomorrow, Wednesday, March 20th, with forecasts of very cloudy skies, showers and maximum temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius in mainland Portugal, said meteorologist Patrícia Gomes. The Algarve must escape the downpours.

“The forecasts for the first day of Spring [Wednesday] are very cloudy skies, showers especially in the interior north and center, the possibility of thunderstorms, especially in the north and center, and light to moderate wind”, he said. the meteorologist at the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

At 3:07 am on the 20th, the Sun will cross the celestial equator (the projection of the Earth's equator in the sky), lighting up more of the Earth's northern hemisphere, giving way to Spring.

A few days after the start of the new season, the time will change, which happens on Easter Sunday, March 31st, moving the clocks forward one hour.

According to Patrícia Gomes, Spring begins with a drop in temperatures, which will still vary between 17 and 22 degrees, depending on the region of the country.

“As far as minimums are concerned, the nights will be cold, with minimums varying between 07 and 11 degrees,” he said.

From Thursday onwards, according to the meteorologist, temperatures will rise and could reach, on Friday, “temperatures above 25 degrees in some regions of the country”, he said.

In the Madeira archipelago, the IPMA predicts generally very cloudy skies and showers for the first day of Spring, more likely on the northern slopes and highlands of the island of Madeira.

Moderate wind is also forecast, being at times strong, especially in the highlands, with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour, in the eastern and western ends of the island of Madeira and in Porto Santo, with gusts of up to 65 kilometers per hour, and a small rise minimum temperature.

In Madeira, temperatures will fluctuate between 15 and 22 degrees and in Porto Santo between 15 and 20.

In the Azores archipelago, the IPMA predicts periods of very cloudy skies with good open weather and generally weak winds.

In the western group (Flores and Corvo) temperatures will vary between 15 and 19 degrees, in the central group (S. Jorge, Faial, Pico, Terceira and Graciosa) between 13 and 18 and in the eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria) between 12 and 17.
