Entities defend the urgency of dredging in the Ria Formosa

Olhão City Council hosted the meeting with several entities this Wednesday, March 13th

The Chamber of Olhão hosted this Wednesday, March 13th, a meeting that brought together the Secretary of State of Fisheries, CCDR Algarve, the Portuguese Environment Agency, the Institute for Nature Conservation and das Florestas, the General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services and Docapesca, which defend the urgency of dredging in the Ria Formosa.

The meeting took place, according to the municipality of Olhão, due to the concern of President António Miguel Pina regarding the «serious siltation problems that compromise the ecological and socioeconomic balance of the estuary, as well as the lack of sand in the dune range of Praia da Fuzeta» .

«The objective was also to understand what is planned in terms of dredging, as well as the areas where the dredging will be placed, with dredging being an essential measure to guarantee water renewal, sediment oxygenation, maintenance of navigation channels and the safeguarding of natural habitats", the Municipality of Olhão also states in a note.

Thus, the entities present were unanimous in the decision to join forces so that the dredging begins as soon as possible and that, in addition to the dredged materials being deposited in the immersion polygons, they are also used to reinforce the dune cordon.
