Sofia Figueiredo is the winner of the 8th edition of the UAlg Alumni Career Award

Born in Lisbon, Sofia Figueiredo completed her degree in Systems and Computer Engineering in 1999 at the University of Algarve

Sofia Figueiredo, graduated in Systems and Computer Engineering (1999), was distinguished with the Alumni Career Award from the University of Algarve (UAlg), in a public ceremony, which took place this Monday, February 26th, in the library's seminar room António Rosa Mendes from the Gambelas Campus.

It was with «great honor» that the honoree received the Alumni Career Award, mentioning during her acceptance speech that «this initiative is of enormous importance, as it allows the alumni community to reconnect with the University».

Sofia Figueiredo also highlighted that: «with this distinction I hope to be able to influence women and girls scientists, believing that this award is also about representation».

Finally, the alumni she states that she is now “ambassador of UAlg” and that she hopes to “honor this responsibility”.

Born in Lisbon, Sofia Figueiredo completed her degree in Systems and Computer Engineering in 1999 at the University of Algarve.

She has a master's degree in Bioinformatics from the University of Lisbon and a PhD in Theoretical Biophysics from Humbolt-Universität zu Berlin.

She is a researcher in the area of ​​computational biology in the pharmaceutical industry and has more than 18 years of experience in developing mathematical models of biological processes and data analysis.

Passionate about applying mathematical methods to solve complex problems in medicine or biology.

More than ten scientific publications, with +650 citations in total (h-index 9) and more than 30 oral communications, also as main speaker (guest) at international conferences (e.g. FELASA) and at the European Parliament.

Successfully establishes international collaborations in academia and industry. Mentor young scientists. Active in voluntary work as executive president of ASPPA, eV (Portuguese Association of Researchers in Germany) in 2019-2020.

Winner of the 2015 Nature Competition, “Publishing Better Science Through Better Data”.

He has three children and lives in Germany with his family.
