Portimão receives a visit from the Turkish municipality of Bayrakli

Within the scope of the “Town Twinning Turkey and EU” project

The Municipality of Portimão will receive, between the 15th and 17th of February, a visit from a delegation from the Turkish municipality of Bayrakli, as part of the “Town Twinning Turkey and EU” project.

According to the Portimão municipality, the activity aims to «strengthen institutional ties and share good practices between the two municipalities, which should soon sign a partnership and twinning protocol».

The delegation, led by the president of the Turkish municipality Serdar Sandal, will be received on the morning of February 15th by the president of the Chamber Isilda Gomes. That afternoon there will be a visit to the headquarters of EMARP – Municipal Water Company
and Portimão Waste, where you will learn about the projects currently being developed, with an emphasis on bio-waste and water.

On the morning of the 16th, the delegation will visit the Portimão Museum, with a trip on a solar boat planned, while the afternoon will be filled with a trip to Alvor, focusing mainly on the Lifeguard Interpretive Center and the walkway that serves the estuary.

Finally, the morning of February 17th will be occupied by a visit to the nursery farm operating in Vale da Lama, to watch how a “BiomateralKIT” works, using oyster shells and other food waste, in order to transform these elements, reusing them in a sustainable way.

According to the Municipality of Portimão, this practical and pedagogical experience, which aims at an adequate use of biomaterials and their reintegration into the circular economic cycle, serves as the motto for the bootcamp which, between the 19th and 23rd of February, will involve four classes from the Group of Bemposta schools and two from the Poeta António Aleixo School Group, with a total of around 120 secondary school students.

«The bootcamp, which is related to the “Town Twinning Turkey and EU” project, will allow students to develop experiences centered on participatory design and co-creation processes, addressing topics such as sustainability, circularity, the environment, positive nature, biodesign and biomaterials, among others, under the guidance and leadership of a team of professors from ISMAT – Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes», explains the municipality.

This month's bootcamp will be followed by an awareness-raising action on the 15th of May aimed at the Porto community, and between these two moments, students will have the opportunity to submit their “BiomateralKIT” projects to a competition, with a final exhibition in October 2024.

The “Town Twinning Turkey and EU” project, led by the Municipalities of Portimão and İzmir Bayraklı, in partnership with ISMAT and the Izmir University of Economics, was started on November 1, 2023, lasts for one year and the value of 115,955.52 euros, intended to activate the “BiomaterialKIT” in the schools and communities involved.

In Portimão, this project involves the participation of one hundred students from EBS Bemposta and Escola Secundária Poeta António Aleixo, as well as 50 'stakeholder' teachers from different groups in the municipality and various community agents.

«The purpose is to create methodologies and practices for the academic context, the integration of these subjects into applied projects, community integration actions and the development of local strategies, plans and roadmaps related to climate change and sustainability, in order to radically change behaviors and slow down the process of destruction of the planet», concludes the Municipality of Portimão.
