Demonstration for the right to housing takes to the streets on January 27th in the Algarve and Alentejo

Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Évora, Beja and Sines among the 19 cities in the country where protests are planned

The demonstration in defense of the right to housing that the Casa Para Viver Platform scheduled for January 27th will take place in 19 cities across the country, including in the Algarve and Alentejo, the Porta a Porta – For the Right to Housing movement announced today.

According to the movement, protests are planned in Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Évora, Beja, Sines, Portalegre, Lisbon, Porto, Setúbal, Braga, Aveiro, Leiria, Benavente, Coimbra, Viseu, Funchal and Covilhã.

This demonstration, the third for the right to housing scheduled by the platform, made up of around a hundred associations, is justified because the “problems persist”.

In the context of the legislative elections scheduled for March 10, the platform intends to “mark the electoral campaign” and commit candidates to housing, taking into account demands that they already submitted to political parties in June.

These proposals include regulating and lowering rents and bank payments, stopping evictions where there are no housing alternatives, placing vacant properties belonging to large owners on the market, ending incentives for real estate speculation and real estate investment funds and ending benefits for non-habitual residents.

In parallel, they defend strong investment in public and cooperative housing.

The two protests carried out by the movement took thousands of people to the streets on April 1st and September 24th, 2023.
