Unrest at sea: Be very careful when going to the beach or by the sea on New Year's Eve

Algarve and Alentejo coasts escape the sea turmoil, but there is little care

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) today appealed to the population not to visit places exposed to sea disturbances, “as the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas”.

“With the arrival of the new year, a time when many people travel to beaches and coastal areas”, the AMN advises “the population to avoid frequenting areas exposed to maritime agitation, adopting a preventive and safety posture, avoiding exposing themselves unnecessarily to risk.”

In a statement, the AMN states that forecasts point to a significant increase in maritime agitation on the western coast of mainland Portugal and in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos, “very characteristic of the winter sea”.

Given these forecasts, the AMN recommends that people always maintain “a considerable distance from the water line, avoiding being surprised, as the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas”.

Therefore, the population should not frequent areas exposed to sea disturbances, such as jetties and groynes, and should avoid going to baths, adopting a preventive and safety stance, he advises.

According to information available on the AMN website, the Viana do Castelo and Douro sea bars are closed to all navigation due to sea unrest.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon under yellow warning, between 06:00 on Sunday and 03:00 on Monday , due to forecast sea unrest.

The IPMA predicts the occurrence of waves from the northwest with a significant height of four to five meters.

According to the institute, New Year's Eve in mainland Portugal should be without precipitation, with rain returning to the North and Center regions in the first days of 2024.
