Olhanense Etson Barros becomes national cross-country champion

Etson Barros, 22 years old, from Olhão, became national long cross-country champion, in absolute and under-23, with a time of 26.56 minutes, in the National Championships that took place this Sunday, November 26th, in Amora ( Seixal).

The athlete currently from Benfica, but trained at Clube Oriental de Pechão, under coach Paulo Murta, had been 2nd in 2022, but this time managed to reach the top spot on the podium. He thus succeeded teammate Samuel Barata, winner of the last two editions and absent yesterday to prepare for participation in the Valencia Marathon, in Spain.

Etson Barros left fellow Benfica fans André Pereira and Duarte Gomes one and five seconds behind, respectively.

Rui Pinto (Sporting), champion in 2015, 2017 and 2021, was left off the podium, finishing in sixth place, fourth among the Portuguese, 37 seconds behind Zakayo and 13 behind Etson Barros.

For her part, Mariana Machado (Sporting de Braga) won the title of national long cross-country champion for the third time in a row, by winning the 100th edition of the championships, in 24.24 minutes.

The 23-year-old athlete from Braga, surpassed her mother Albertina Machado, who has two titles, in terms of history, prevailing over the approximately eight kilometers of the course at Quinta Maria Pires, the Kenyan Fancy Cherono (Sporting), second in five seconds, and the Spanish Ester Navarrete (Sporting de Braga), third, to six.

Neide Dias (Sporting) was the fourth to cross the finish line in the race held in the 33rd edition of the Corta-Mato Cidade de Amora and secured second place among the Portuguese women, 12th, while Ana Ferreira (Sporting) finished the national podium, to 32.

Inês Borba (Sporting) was the first under-23 to finish the race simultaneously with the open race, in 13th place overall, with a time of 25.51.

Sporting de Braga won the collective classification in the women's absolute, with 16 points, four less than Sporting, who repeated the position previously achieved in the men's, with 33 points, against Benfica's 13.

Before the absolute and under-23 races, the under-20 national titles were contested, with the victories of Lourenço Rodrigues (Juventude Ilha Verde) and Diana Fernandes (Feirense), and under-18, with the triumphs of Manuel Santos ( Gira Sol) and Lara Costa (Várzea).

The absolute competitions were preceded by a tribute to several of the national cross-country champions, with the presence of former athletes such as Carlos Lopes, Rosa Mota, Domingos Castro, Paulo Guerra and Carla Sacramento, among others.
