Commission for the Promotion of the Rights of the Elderly Faro meets for the first time

First meeting took place on October 30th

The Municipal Commission for the Promotion of the Rights of the Elderly Faro met for the first time on the 30th of October, in the Nobre hall of the Chamber of Faro. 

The commission is constituted as a local body representing elderly people, with consultative, assessment, problem analysis and solution proposal functions, aiming to prevent and eradicate situations of alleged mistreatment and/or neglect, contributing to the improvement improving the quality of life of the municipality's elderly residents through access to information and promotion of their rights and protection, in order to guarantee their well-being, dignity and quality of life.

In this context, according to the municipality of Faro, this committee is responsible for analyzing the situations that are reported to it, carrying out the necessary procedures to safeguard the safety and promotion of the dignity of the elderly and informing the elderly population and their families of their rights.

Furthermore, the commission aims to raise awareness among the population of the need to protect elderly people and the importance of valuing them and promoting healthy and active aging, as well as developing actions to prevent dangerous situations, in particular situations of violence.

This Commission is made up of two work groups: the Restricted Intervention Center – which includes the Municipality of Faro, the Hospital of Faro, the GNR, the Social Security Institute, the PSP and the University of Algarve – and the Center for Responses in the Area of ​​Aging, which, in addition to these entities, also includes ARPI, the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Association, the Cultural Center and Social Society of S. Martinho de Estoi, the Cultural and Social Center of Santa Bárbara de Nexe, the Portuguese Red Cross – Delegation of Faro/Loulé, the Parish Council of Santa Bárbara de Nexe, the Parish Council of Montenegro, Plataforma Saúde em Dialogo – Espaço Saúde em Dialogo de Faro, Provectus – Association for the Benefit of the Elderly, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Faro, Sociedade Recreativa Bordeirense, the University of Algarve for the Elderly, the Union of Parishes of Conceição and Estoi, the Union of Parishes of Faro and a representative of each political force with representation in the Municipal Assembly.

In a note, the municipality of Faro reinforces that this nucleus is responsible, among others, for producing recommendations, proposals, policy measures and validating proposals by the Restricted Intervention Nucleus, informing the Commission of the number of vacancies existing, by valence, in the case of representing entities with valences in the area of ​​aging as well as approving the accession of new entities.

The Municipality also informs that anyone who holds information about situations of alleged abuse/neglect or vulnerability of elderly residents in the municipality of Faro, you may report the situations in question to the commission, in person at the premises of the Department of Social Development and Education of the Municipality of Faro, in writing or by telephone.
