Castro Marim City Council has a new cleaning, washing and sanitizing service for undifferentiated and surrounding urban waste disposal containers (RU), with an integrated and reinforced team.
As of 2020 and despite the large investment taking place in the collection of Urban Solid Waste, both in terms of acquiring new vehicles and hiring new employees, this is seen as «one of the biggest challenges of municipal management, particularly after of the external contracting of services being successively rejected by the Municipal Assembly”.
This is because Algar, the concessionary entity for waste management on the rise, «doubled the tariff charged for each ton delivered, in the area of unsorted waste. On the other hand, each year it has become more difficult to collect recycling bins – recyclable waste”, laments the municipality.
«With a very significant budgetary burden and the constraints inherent to public procurement itself, the response to the UK problem is not as quick as would be desirable. Therefore, to analyze and plan an effective response and improve the Urban Waste Management service and its hygiene and health, the Municipality of Castro Marim moved forward with the organization of teams, reinforced with the external contracting of services, in order to make a muscular intervention from cleaning the surroundings, sanitizing and washing the containers, to georeferencing and evaluating the execution times of each task», he explains in a press release.
Work is ongoing until the end of November, including all disposal equipment and surrounding areas, a set of around 600 surface containers and 65 semi-buried equipment (molok's).
Furthermore, the work is carried out with treated water from the intermunicipal WWTP of Vila Real de Santo António.
«The best management of urban solid waste actually implies a change in individual awareness and public responsibility, which represents the creation of new mechanisms of action, but also of surveillance and, naturally, the reorganization of services and also ongoing training», underlines vice-president Filomena Sintra.
