Municipality of Alcoutim is the 2nd best payer nationally, Lagoa is the 4th

Three Algarve municipalities are among the 59 best payers in the country

Alcoutim is the second best municipality nationally and the first at regional level in the indicator “Municipalities with shorter Average Payment Period”, according to the Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities 2022.

Num ranking led by the municipality of Azambuja, Alcoutim comes in 2nd place among the municipalities that take the least time to pay service providers, as it only takes one day to do so.

Among the 59 municipalities that are the best paying, there is also Lagoa, in 4th position nationally, which also takes just one day to pay, as well as Olhão (7 days).

The Yearbook authors point out that «the 59 municipalities that, in 2022, paid in the shortest period of time – almost immediately – were, in general, small or medium-sized municipalities, with only three large municipalities appearing in this list (Leiria , Sintra and Guimarães)».

Conversely, there is only one municipality in the Algarve in ranking of the Municipalities with the longest Average Payment Period. This is Vila Real de Santo António, which occupies 40th position, as it takes an average of 29 days to pay its suppliers.

Even so, far from the municipality at the top of this list, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, which takes 254 days to pay.

The Financial Yearbook of Portuguese Municipalities now published presents an economic and financial analysis of the accounts of the 308 municipalities, 137 municipal companies and the 24 municipal services, relating to the 2022 financial year.

In its 19th edition, the document, coordinated by professor Maria José Fernandes, also has the contribution of researchers Pedro Camões and Susana Jorge.

The study, carried out by the Center for Research in Accounting and Taxation at the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave at the Center for Research in Political Science at the University of Minho, has, for another year, the support of the Order of Certified Accountants (OCC) and of the Court of Auditors and has become an unavoidable reference in the national municipal panorama.
