The 18th edition of the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Literary Competition, promoted by the Chambers of Lagos and Loulé, has already started. Until February 17th of next year, Algarve students in the 2nd and 3rd cycles, as well as secondary education, can compete.
There are several categories in the competition: text (poetry, prose or essay) and illustration. All works must be related to Sophia's work.
This competition, with almost two decades of existence, organized by the Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Library and the Júlio Dantas Municipal Library, has as main objective to encourage the reading of the work of this writer, a reference in Portuguese Literature and the first woman to be awarded with the Camões Prize.
Not being from the Algarve, he had a strong connection to this region (with a holiday home in Lagos).
In this competition, original and unpublished works are accepted until the date of the final decision, and they must make reference to the original work of the author on which they reflect.
In the text and illustration categories, group work may be submitted, with a maximum of three elements (all from the same teaching cycle).
Work can be delivered in person to the Libraries (Loulé or Lagos) or sent by post.
The Competition jury is made up of a representative from Loulé City Council, another from Lagos City Council, and also a representative from the General Directorate of Books, Archives and Library, a representative from DGESTER – General Directorate of School Establishments in the Algarve and a guest author.
The awards ceremony will take place this year at Cineteatro Louletano, on April 20th, as part of World Book Day.
The jury will award four prizes for each level of education, two per category – Text modality (Poetry, Prose, Essay) and Illustration modality: 1st prize: gift card worth 400 euros + participation diploma, 2nd prize: gift card offer worth 200 euros + participation diploma.
There is the possibility of awarding honorable mentions: books + participation diploma.
