The inauguration of the nursing home and crèche in Olhos de Água, a concert by Gloria Gaynor, a fireworks show and the now traditional award of good service medals to municipal officials mark the program of Albufeira Municipality Day, which will be celebrated in Sunday the 20th.

The highlight of the programme, the inauguration of the Residential Structure for the Elderly, Day Centre, Home Care Service and Nursery at Olhos de Água, will take place at 18 pm, at the site of Torre da Medronheira.

This is, according to the Council of Albufeira, «a social facility long awaited by the population and of vital importance for the municipality».

The building to be inaugurated, which cost around 5,2 million euros, supported by CRESC Algarve 2020, consists of two floors and has independent areas for each of the valences, with separate entrances for the nursery and the Day Center and Residential Structure for the Elderly (ERPI).

The Nursery has a capacity for 42 children, while the other valences can accommodate a total of 132 users: 57 elderly people (ERPI), 35 elderly people (in the Day Centre), plus 40 users of the Home Support Service.

Also very popular is the Municipality Day celebration concert, which this year features the singer Glória Gaynor, who became famous because of the theme “I Will Survive”, which will perform from 22 pm in Praça dos Pescadores.

«In addition to her famous 1978 theme, the American singer promises to offer fans songs from her extraordinary 2002 album, “I Wish You love”, as well as “Testimony”, released in 2019, in a tribute to gospel» , says the municipality.

At midnight, there will be a pyromusical show from Praia dos Pescadores. The Party continues with the Deelight DJ Set, with the start of the performance scheduled for 00:15.

The party program is not limited to these initiatives and not even to the 20th.

The program of celebrations begins two days earlier, on Friday, August 18, with the artistic installation by Tamara Alves “O Infinito da Noite”, «which is presented for the last time, in the access tunnel to Praia do Peneco, from 20:00 onwards, which will be joined by a set by DJ Shaka Lion on the sand».

On the 19th of August, from 22 pm, the stage at Praia dos Pescadores receives the Algarve band IRIS, led by Domingos Caetano. The night ends with Zé Black DJ Set, who takes the stage at 00:23 pm.

On the Municipality Day itself, August 20th, the day begins with the usual Raising of the Flag, to the sound of the National Anthem, performed by the centenary Banda Musical e Recreio Popular de Paderne, accompanied by a Guard of Honor by the Volunteer Firefighters of Albufeira, at 9:30 am, in front of the Town Hall.

At 10:00 am, the inauguration of the sculpture of the Coat of Arms of the Council of Albufeira takes place, a replica in stone, by Orlando Sousa. This is followed (at 10:15 am) by the inauguration of the Sculpture Work “Primavera” by the artist from Albufeira, Vanessa Barragão.

The Solemn Session for the Attribution of Good Service Medals to municipal employees with more than 15, 25 and 35 years of service, in the bronze, silver and gold degrees, is scheduled for 10:30 am, in the Main Hall of the Town Hall.

In the morning, there will also be the opening of the Exhibition “Portugal” – Paintings by Jorge Landmann (1780-1854), at the Municipal Museum of Archeology (9:30 am). The sports program starts at 11:00 am, at Praia do Inatel, with the 17th Sea Race Albufeira; at 11 am the 15th Prova Kids de Albufeira takes place; at 12:15 pm the main race of 2000 meters takes place and at 13:45 pm the prize giving.

The Day of the Municipality of Albufeira marks the donation of the Charter to the municipality, by D. Manuel I, in the year 1504. This royal document, used in Portugal between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, was intended to regulate the administration and duties and privileges of its inhabitants.
