Manuel Teixeira Gomes and “his” palm trees in Portimão

After a few days, the facebookian dust had settled, the official explanation came

At the beginning of the month, a new street was opened in Portimão, in the riverside area, next to Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes. So far so good, the worst was when they planted six huge palm trees on the sidewalk, next to the House.

Controversy immediately broke out on Facebook (“Livro das trombas”, in a very free translation) with people with quick trigger fingers shooting in all directions, opining, criticizing and imagining the most far-fetched conspiracy theories.

Anyway, things that happen all the time on social media. By the way, I also didn't find this episode of acute palmitis.

After a few days, the facebookian dust had already settled, came the official explanation that the six palm trees, integrated in the project of the future Núcleo Museológico Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, paid homage to him doubly, since they were a symbol of a wealthy house such as his and they represented North Africa, where he died.

I get the idea, BUT...

This big BUT has a reason for being. If even the new street is called José Libânio Gomes, father of the honoree, who made his fortune trading dried fruits, and the idea is to pay tribute via trees, why not do it through a carob tree, an almond tree and a fig tree ? Okay, you can also leave the palm tree for the above reasons.

and this plant biodiversity it would even reflect the various facets of Manuel Teixeira Gomes: merchant, diplomat, writer, President of the Republic…

Would this be such a far-fetched idea?
