Road campaign warns of the dangers of using cell phones while driving

Campaign is called “At the wheel, the cell phone can wait”

The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and the PSP are launching this Tuesday, July 18, a road safety campaign to alert drivers to the sometimes fatal consequences of improper use of the mobile phone while driving.

In a statement, the authorities explain that the campaign “At the wheel, the cell phone can wait” will run until the 24th and point out that using a cell phone while driving increases the probability of an accident by four times.

«At 50 km/h, looking at the cell phone for three seconds is the same as driving a distance of 42 meters blindfolded, the equivalent of a queue of 10 cars», they add.

Furthermore, they warn, «it is not worth risking losing three points on your driving licence».

The campaign will include ANSR awareness actions in mainland Portugal, as well as bodies and services of the administrations of the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira and inspection operations, by the GNR and the PSP, with special focus on roads and accesses with high traffic road.

The awareness actions will take place simultaneously with the inspection operations and will take place at the Carcavelos toll booths, towards Lisbon-Cascais (18th), in two streets of Castelo Branco (19th), at the Coimbra Norte/IP3 toll booths (20th ), in Espinho (21st) and in Santarém (24th).

ANSR, GNR and PSP insist that using a cell phone while driving is a risk to the safety of oneself and others, noting that drivers who use their cell phones while driving are slower to recognize and react to dangers.

«Road accidents are not a fatality and its most serious consequences can be avoided by adopting safe behavior on the road», they add.
