Budens distinguished as Eco-Parish XXI 2023

There were four Algarve parishes awarded

The parish of Budens, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, was recognized as Eco-Parish XXI 2023, in a ceremony that will take place on Thursday, July 13th, in Miranda do Corvo.

This was the first time that a parish in the municipality of Vila do Bispo received this award.

From the Algarve, in addition to Budens, the União de Freguesias received the distinction Faro and the councils of Quelfes (Olhão) and São Gonçalo (Lagos).

According to the council of Budens, the candidacy of this parish obtained a score of 62,1%, a value that left those responsible for the municipality «satisfied, but with the motivation to improve».

«This is the assumption of a commitment to continue the work in favor of a more sustainable parish», says the team led by Ana Custódio.

The president of the Parish Council of Budens was the one who received the award awarded by ABAE (Association Blue Flag of Europe), on Thursday, accompanied by Raquel Amador, treasurer of the Parish Council, and by Rute Silva, mayor Municipality of Vila do Bispo.

To achieve this award, «the participation of our customers as well as the various institutions and associations that carry out activities in the parish was essential, and to which we are very grateful».

At national level, in the 2023 edition, 178 parishes formalized their candidacy, of which 131 achieved the Green Flag.

Eco-Freguesias XXI is an ABAE project started in 2014, which aims to work with parishes towards the development of eco-communities or sustainable communities. In addition to the Eco-Freguesias, ABAE is the entity responsible for awarding the Blue Flag in Portugal and the Eco XXI, Eco-Schools awards, among others.

Eco-Freguesias XXI fits into all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the 2030 Agenda, presenting itself as a strategy to increase local sustainability, valuing the processes of participatory citizenship and recognizing the parishes with the best quality of life offer to its inhabitants.

It seeks, through the existence of a biennial candidacy, to value pathways, evaluate processes and recognize results that materialize through the attribution of the Eco-Freguesias XXI award.

The next edition will be in 2025.
