Climate: Oceans recorded the hottest May ever

Announcement of the European Copernicus service

The surface of the oceans has just recorded its warmest month ever in May, the European Copernicus service announced today.

“Ocean surface temperatures are already at record levels and our data indicate that the average temperature for all ice-free seas in May 2023 was higher than any other month in May,” said the deputy director of the service in a statement. European Copernicus on Climate Change (C3S), Samantha Burgess.
