The “Algarve Sevens” rugby tournament returns to the Sports Complex of Vila Real de Santo António between the 9th and 11th of June.
The big news this year will be the "award" of the event by Rugby Europe, with the attribution of the organization of the European Rugby Sevens Championship, integrated in the same weekend as all the regular tournaments of the Algarve 7s. Recognition that, according to the municipality, «brings an added responsibility, raising the event to a new level».
In addition to the stages of the Men's and Women's European Sevens Championship, the Algarve 7's Elite Tournament once again brings together 12 professional teams with emphasis on Seventise (Algarve 7s Champions 2022), Union Begles Bordeaux (Top14 France), as well as the national teams from Hong Kong and China.
This year, another novelty will be the inaugural Netball tournament, a modality little practiced in Portugal, but which «is experiencing great international growth», and which follows the vision that the company promoting the event – Sports Ventures – has for the Algarve 7s, to make it the biggest sports festival in southern Europe.
For José Diogo Trigo de Moraes, promoter of the event, «this 4th edition will be the best ever». «Registrations were a 'boom' this year, all competitions sold out when there were still 4 months left for the start of the tournament», he points out.
«In total, more than 50 rugby teams and 12 netball teams will be on the field, in a total of almost 2000 direct participants who will be in the Algarve for more than five nights», says the VRSA Chamber.
In addition to the sporting legacy, this event is also extremely important for tourism and local commerce, where more than 9 overnight stays will be generated.
«Our expectations are the best and we will receive all the teams in the magnificent climate of the Algarve, ideal for the practice of rugby, in one of the best sports complexes in the country, which has supported us since the beginning and with a group of teams and competitions that promises a high-level rugby sevens show», says the tournament director.
The Finals of the 4th edition of the Algarve 7s Tournaments will be played on the 11th of June, between 17 pm and 30 pm, at the Municipal Stadium in Vila Real de Santo António.
