AmbiOlhão reduces polluting discharges into the Ria Formosa by 84,2 cubic meters/day

Municipal company of Olhão took stock of the work carried out in the last year

AmbiOlhão says that there were "less 84,2 cubic meters of discharges in the Ria Formosa", after a year of interventions in the network, which aimed at "eliminating undue inflows to the city's rainwater and wastewater drainage networks".

The guarantee was given by Carlos Martins, the executive director of the municipal company in Olhão, in a balance sheet he made of AmbiOlhão's activity in the last year.

After characterizing the rainwater network, «an exhaustive visual and video inspection of wastewater and rainwater collectors» was carried out.

This task « relied on a digital tool that allowed a faster and more precise work: the AmbiOlhao team now has the help of the Navia platform, a software that allows the daily management, in real time, of the information, tasks and teams that operate in public infrastructure», according to the Câmara de Olhão.

The tool also allows «a better understanding of the functioning of the system, by carrying out a daily analysis of occurrences, which makes it possible to identify anomalous discharges».

Thanks to this investment of 28 euros, «562 manholes were checked, where functional anomalies were found, such as roots in pipes or blocked drains, improper connections of wastewater (sewers) to the rainwater network, residual infiltration in the rainwater network , building intrusions, or need for cleaning».

The video inspection, «another fundamental tool, allowed a fine-tooth combing of 7090 meters of the sanitation network and 1970 meters of the rainwater network, where anomalies to be corrected were identified, such as waterproofing of manholes, rectification of improper connections and requalification of the wastewater drainage network'.

«This last intervention represents an investment of around 99.300 euros, of which 30% has already been carried out. In total, 105 improper connections were rectified which, added to the structural anomalies that were corrected, represent less 84,2 cubic meters of discharges in the Ria Formosa per day», reveals the municipality.

The report presented by AmbiOlhão also gives an account of the work, «already carried out and to be carried out, of remodeling the wastewater drainage network, which represents a total investment of around 285 thousand euros».

Among the planned interventions, the Council of Olhão highlights «the one in Bairro 16 de Junho, already concluded, the one in Estrada de Quelfes, in execution, the one in Rua Antero Nobre, on consignment, the one in Rua da Padaria, in the launch phase of contract, and that of Azinhaga da Patinha, in the design phase».

With regard to prevention, «AmbiOlhão highlights in the last 12 months the periodic monitoring of discharges from rainwater collectors, through the visualization of rainwater outlets in the Ria Formosa and the identification of anomalous discharges».

«It is also worth highlighting the cleaning work of the waste and rainwater drainage collectors, which allowed 11.800 meters of the sanitation network and 865 meters of the rainwater network to be intervened, in an investment of 36.600 euros», concluded the Chamber.

António Miguel Pina, President of the Chamber and Board of Directors of AmbiOlhão, underlines, for his part, that «more than the numbers themselves, what is important to highlight is what they represent in terms of improving the environmental quality of our municipality and our waters from the Ria Formosa, which is only possible through this meticulous work, and an investment in the present and in the future of the quality of life and infrastructure of our municipality».
