Student at Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura is 3rd in national calculus championship

Yuri Maia is only six years old

Yuri Maia, a student at Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura (CIV), won 3rd place in the National ALOHA Calculus Championship, which took place on June 3, at the Artistic School of the Coimbra Conservatory of Music.

The six-year-old student, from the CIV Year 1 class, was the "third fastest to complete the challenge of 70 mathematical operations in a maximum of five minutes".

The competition, which was attended by students from all districts of mainland Portugal and the islands, aged between 4 and 13 years old, «aims to find the fastest students to make mental calculations with precision. beyond the Tiny Tots (from 5 to 6 years old), the ALOHA National Calculus Championship also had the participation of Children and Kids (from 4 to 5 and from 8 to 13 years old, respectively)», according to Colégio Internacional de Vilamoura.

«The ALOHA program aims to teach mental calculations with great speed and precision, placing Mathematics on the level of something fun and challenging and enhancing the cognitive development of minors through the use and visualization of the abacus», he concludes.
