A tuna weighing 386 kilos was the “trophy” of the 1st capture operation of 2023 by Real Atunara

General Manager of the company considered this first operation «a success»

A bluefin tuna weighing 386 kilos was the largest specimen of this species that was caught in the first capture operation of 2023 carried out by the company Real Atunara in its Armação do Barril, off the coast of Tavira.

In this «large-scale operation», which began at around 5:00 am and lasted «for more than eight hours», «several vessels and 30 men» were involved, several tons of bluefin tuna were captured, whose destination is «the demanding market international», according to the company.

«We can consider this first operation a success. We caught several tons of fresh bluefin tuna. (…) Bluefin tuna is caught in our nets on its way to the Mediterranean where it spawns and is one of the most desirable species, namely to be served as sushi or sashimi», according to Miguel Socorro, general manager of Real Atunara.

In 2023, the company «will be able to capture more than 200 tonnes of this species, excellent news for the Portuguese trade balance».

Almadrava is the term that designates a tuna fishing trap, a sustainable fishing gear «which, as opposed to trawling, prevents the destruction of the bottom of the sea and that strictly complies with the ICCAT and HUH".
