São Brás de Alportel celebrates 109 years of “independence” with the fado of Carminho

Solemn session culminates with the inauguration of the Monument to the Fighters

São Brás de Alportel celebrates, on the 1st of June, the 109th anniversary of its elevation to municipality, separating itself from the neighboring municipality of Faro, with a program that will have as its high point the inauguration of the Monument to the São Brasenses Fighters, «a fair tribute to memory and an appeal for Peace».

The ceremonies begin at 10 am, in Rua das Comunidades Portuguesas, with the raising of the flag by the Volunteer Firefighters of São Brás de Alportel, to the sound of the National Anthem, interpreted by the town's Philharmonic Band.

This is followed by the Solemn Commemorative Session, which will be part of the municipal insignia delivery ceremony and the swearing-in of the Commemorations Commission for the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974.

The Solemn Session culminates with the inauguration of the Monument to the Combatants, «in honor of the valiant people from São Paulo who throughout the ages have committed themselves to building peace».

The program will also have a digital version, with the launch of the application of the Municipality of São Brás de Alportel and the Geoportal of São Brás de Alportel in its version 2.0.

The program will continue in the afternoon, with another edition of the Children's Party, in Jardim Carrera Viegas, which will be prepared with many surprises and games that will delight the youngest.

The São Brás Cineteatro Jaime Pinto also celebrates Children's Day, with the exhibition “Painting with the Children”, an exhibition of works created by students of teacher Maria de Deus, with the inauguration scheduled for 16 pm.

The municipal executive fulfills the tradition of paying homage to the county's founder, João Rosa Beatriz, with the pilgrimage to his mausoleum in the Municipal Cemetery, at 15 pm.

The Municipal Gallery opens its doors at 16:15 pm to inaugurate the exhibition “São Brás de Alportel, People and Memories – part 1 – Street by Street”, which was born from the initiative of two people from São Paulo.

The program culminates with a commemorative concert by the fado singer Carminho, which begins at 22 pm at Praça da República. On stage, the artist will present her most recent album “Portuguese”. It will be a «memorable moment» that will end with the traditional fireworks display, which is already a tradition.

The commemoration program continues throughout the month. As part of the National Cork Oak and Cork Day, the launch of the book “São Brás de Alportel, Terra de Corticeiros”, by César Correia, will take place on June 2, at 18 pm, at the Museu do Traje de São Brás from Alportel. This is a work that immortalises the county's relationship with the cork industry, as well as with the people of São Paulo who played an important role in boosting this activity in the county.

On Portugal Day, June 10th, the Center for Arts and Crafts opens its doors at 12:00 noon to inaugurate the interpretive space of the county's first public school "Escola Antes de Abril", which will enrich the Route of Memory of São Paulo Bras de Alportel.
