Sagres and Vila do Bispo host festival dedicated to Marine Forests

«Celebrating the diversity of seaweed on the coast of Vila do Bispo and Sagres and making known its importance» are the objectives of the event

Marine Forests will be the star of a new festival that will be born in Vila do Bispo and Sagres, on the initiative of the Center for Marine Sciences (CCMar) of the University of Algarve, whose 1st edition will take place next week, between 15 and 20 May.

Lectures, seaweed observation and sampling, species identification and herbarium preparation are the initiatives planned for this festival, which will be attended by around 30 students from the University of Algarve.

The event, open to the community, «aims to celebrate the diversity of seaweeds on the coast of Vila do Bispo and Sagres and make known its importance in enriching coastal environments and purifying the sea, making the water cleaner, contributing to the climate resilience and for maintaining the habitats of hundreds of other species”.

The lectures, which will take place at the Sagres Lota Interpretation Centre, «will make known the diverse uses and applications of seaweed in areas such as art, cuisine, agriculture, science, sustainable technology and conservation».

On the beaches of Ingrina, Castelejo or Baleeira, seaweed observation and sampling will be carried out, whose participants will have the opportunity to «observe seaweed in its natural habitat».

There will also be an action to identify species and prepare the herbarium, which will take place at the facilities of Docapesca, in Sagres, where people will learn “to document and identify the species observed with the help of researchers from the University of the Algarve”.

The initiative, which has the support of the Vila do Bispo City Council, is free of charge, but requires registration via the email [email protected].
