Civil Protection warns of worsening fire danger in Algarve

ANEPC recalls that it is prohibited to carry out extensive burning without authorization, advising the population to contact the Chamber

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) warned this Thursday of the worsening danger of rural fires in the coming days, especially in the Algarve, taking into account IPMA forecasts of wind, hot and dry weather.

In a statement, ANEPC states that the forecast of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) points to maximum temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius in the regions of the South and Alto Tejo, low relative humidity values and intensification of the wind on the west coast. and in the Western Algarve until the end of the day on Friday.

The IPMA also foresees an increase in the risk of fire to very high to maximum levels in the interior north and center and in the Algarve.

In this context, regarding the expected risks, the ANEPC notes the «increased risk of fire, with favorable conditions for the eventual occurrence and spread of rural fires, as well as the increased difficulty of suppression actions, especially in the interior North and Center, Lisbon and Tagus Valley, Alentejo and Algarve».

In the note, ANEPC recalls that it is prohibited to carry out extensive burning without authorization, advising the population to contact the City Council.

He also recalls that on days of very high and maximum fire danger, it is forbidden to light fires to cook food throughout the countryside, unless used outside critical areas and in places duly authorized for the purpose, fumigation or disinfestation and the use of brushcutters, brushcutters and shredders.

Due to weather forecasts, civil protection recommends the «adaptation of behaviors and attitudes in the face of the situation of danger of rural fire, namely the adoption of the necessary preventive and precautionary measures».
