President of the Republic does not dismiss the Government, nor dissolve Parliament

Divergence with the Prime Minister «will have other effects in the future»

The President of the Republic will not exonerate the Government, nor dissolve Parliament by triggering early elections, but warns that the current political crisis "will have other effects in the future" and promises increased attention to the governance of António Costa.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a communication to the country, this Thursday, said that, after «everything seen and considered», he continues «to prefer the guarantee of institutional stability», rejecting «scenarios implying immediately and directly or indirectly the call to vote early popular».

«The Portuguese do not need these surprises, these stops, these waits, in a time like this», said the head of state.

Despite ruling out a scenario of dissolution of Parliament and exoneration of the Government, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was harsh in the words he addressed, first, to Minister João Galamba, who reiterated that he should have been exonerated by António Costa, but also to Prime Minister .

Because of the refusal to accept Galamba's resignation, there was "a fundamental disagreement" with Costa. In the past, “it was always possible to hit needles. "Not this time. It was a pity», considered the President of the Republic. "Not because of a personal dispute or between positions", he stressed.

Regarding the future, Marcelo said that he will "learn lessons" from António Costa's refusal to accept Galamba's resignation.

From the outset, he will be "more attentive to political responsibility" and more "intervening in everyday life", warning that he will not abdicate the powers that the Constitution confers on him

"I will have to be even more attentive to the question of the political responsibility of those in charge", he said.

The position taken by the President of the Republic is a reaction to the António Costa's refusal to accept João Galamba's resignation, Minister of Infrastructure, after the controversy involving the member of the Government and his adviser, within the scope of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the situation of TAP.

That same day, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated disagree with the Prime Minister's decision.
