José Estevens was mayor of Castro Marim for 16 years

José Fernandes Estevens, former mayor of Castro Marim from 1998 to 2013, died this Tuesday, May 23, from a prolonged illness.

The former mayor, who was battling cancer and was a native and resident of Altura, was hospitalized at the Hospital de Faro, where he ended up dying this afternoon.

In statements to the Sul Informação, Francisco Amaral, current mayor of Castro Marim, lamented the «death of his predecessor».

José Estevens was mayor of Castro Marim for 16 years, between 1998 and 2013, always elected by the PSD. to Francisco Amaral, until then president of the neighboring municipality of Alcoutim, who won the elections.

That same year, Estevens ran for the Chamber of Tavira, but was defeated by the socialist Jorge Botelho.

In 2016, Estevens starred in um iron arm with Francisco Amaral, jthat, being leader of the Municipality of the Castromarinense PSD, he took away his political confidence, because he also intended to be the candidate for the Chamber again.

But National Political Commission of Social Democrats maintained its support for the re-candidacy of the current mayor Francisco Amaral and Estevens ended up by slam the door to his decades-long party in protest.

In 2017, he ran for an independent movement (Castro Marim Primeiro – CM1), but, despite being elected councilor, he lost the election to Francisco Amaral.
