Monchique inaugurated today, Thursday of Ascension or Espiga, a municipal holiday, a monument to former combatants in the Colonial War.

Paulo Alves, president of the Chamber, told the Sul Informação that Monchique was «the municipality in the Algarve that lost the most young people in the Overseas War. 22 young Monchiques died in that war», in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau.
