Monchique inaugurates monument to combatants

On the municipal holiday, which always takes place on Ascenção or Espiga Thursday

Monchique inaugurated today, Thursday of Ascension or Espiga, a municipal holiday, a monument to former combatants in the Colonial War.

Paulo Alves, president of the Chamber, told the Sul Informação that Monchique was «the municipality in the Algarve that lost the most young people in the Overseas War. 22 young Monchiques died in that war», in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau. There were also some local youths seriously injured.

These are data that attribute even greater significance to the monument, which had the collaboration of the Núcleo de Lagoa-Portimão of the Liga dos Combatentes.
