Vilamoura Marina will have a video surveillance system within a year

The investment is from the Municipality of Loulé and is around 900 thousand euros

The Vilamoura Marina will have a video surveillance system within about a year, announced today the Municipality of Loulé in a note.

The Municipality and the National Republican Guard celebrated on Saturday, 13 May, a protocol that provides for the creation of this measure to "reinforce the safety of people and goods, and public tranquility, in this ex-libris of Algarve tourism".

In addition to the public places in the area surrounding the Marina, the implementation, activation and management of this system will also extend to the access routes to this nautical recreation space, namely Av. Cerro da Vila, Av. Engineer João Meireles, Av. Da Marina, Av. Tivoli, R. do Clube Náutico, R. do Sol, Estrada de Quarteira, Largo do Cinema and R. das Estrelas (areas of passage, permanence and coexistence of a large number of people).

Managed exclusively by the GNR, the proposed system foresees the installation of 42 video cameras and more than fifty sensors to collect information. The monitoring center will be housed in the GNR headquarters in Vilamoura, and it will be possible to view it in the situation room of the Territorial Command of Faro.

The investment is from the Municipality of Loulé and is around 900 thousand euros.

«If all goes well in terms of the public tender, it is expected that it can start operating in the summer of 2024», guaranteed mayor Vítor Aleixo.

«Data protection and 'anonymisation' is a guarantee, not least because the law so provides and, therefore, people's privacy will always be safeguarded», continued the mayor.

Despite some “initial resistance” from the mayor regarding the implementation of this system, the difficulties on the part of the tutelage in increasing the number of staff and, on the other hand, the “good examples” of Portimão and Olhão with an identical system led Vítor Aleixo to change your mind and move towards video surveillance.

«Let's hope that everything goes well and that this is an asset to prevent and reduce delinquency. For a tourist region, which generates so much wealth, the security component is extremely sensitive », she noted.

In turn, Carlos de Almeida, responsible for the Territorial Command of the GNR of Faro, explained that video surveillance will «optimize available resources», allowing privilege to be given to «flexible operational commitment that provides a prompt and timely response, constituting an important complementary mechanism of police activity in the preventive and reactive dimensions».

«This protocol further reinforces the excellent relationship between the National Republican Guard and the Municipality of Loulé in the search for more and better solutions so that the municipality continues to be a space of security and tranquility, and asserts itself more and more as a municipality avant-garde», considered the commander of the GNR in the Algarve.

In a second phase of the project, the idea of the two cooperating entities is to extend video surveillance to the city of Quarteira itself, as it is also an «urban area of great human concentration».
