Government approves changes to parental leave and subsidies

The value of the parental subsidy goes from 83% to 90% of the salary, provided that the father takes at least 60 days out of the 180 planned

The Council of Ministers approved today the regulation of paternity leave, such as the increase in the value of the parental subsidy, from 83% to 90% of the remuneration, provided that the father takes at least 60 days out of the 180 foreseen.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, at the press conference after the Council of Ministers meeting, in Braga.

The measure was foreseen within the scope of the amendments to the Decent Work Agenda.

The regulation of the measure was also approved, which establishes that the father's mandatory parental leave goes from the current 20 working days to 28 consecutive or interpolated days, as the respective payment.

The minister underlined that, in the scope of parental leave, the Decent Work Agenda was thus fulfilled by reinforcing and creating mechanisms to encourage the equal sharing of leave between men and women.

An increase in initial parental allowances was also approved, as well as the extended parental allowance "whenever there is real sharing between both parents", highlighted Ana Mendes Godinho.

The value of the parental subsidy increases from 83% to 90% of the reference remuneration, provided that the father takes at least 60 days out of the 180 of the total leave.

The measure was presented more than a year ago at the Social Concert, within the scope of the discussion of the Decent Work Agenda.

The extended parental subsidy goes from 25% to 35% of remuneration, in cases where there is sharing, said the minister.
