Geopalcos take art, science and nature to Loulé, Albufeira and Silves

Geopalcos – Arte.Ciência.Natureza 2023 starts in Paderne

Art, science and nature. Geopalcos returns, this Saturday, May 20, to the municipalities of Loulé, Albufeira and Silves, in yet another action by the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis, candidate for UNESCO world heritage.

As in 2021, Geopalcos – a biannual initiative by the aspiring Geoparque Algarvensis- will cross visual arts, music, dance, cinema, performance and cultural and knowledge sharing.

Geopalcos – Arte.Ciência.Natureza 2023 kicks off in Paderne, Albufeira, this Saturday, the 20th, at 17 pm, with the inauguration of the sculptural installation “Walking on the bottom of the sea”, by Jorge Cabrita Matias, a visual artist who made a career in Brussels after studying in Portugal and decided to settle in the Algarve.

The installation is inspired by the fossils found in the Planalto do Escarpão, located between Paderne and Ferreiras.

The work can be visited at the Ermida do Castelo de Paderne, between the 20th of May and the 17th of June, from Monday to Saturday, from 9:30 am to 13:00 pm and from 14:00 pm to 18:00 pm.

On Sunday, the 21st, there is music in Loulé, more specifically in Alte, in Fonte Grande, with an “enigmatic” concert in which the accordion sounds louder, with João Frade & Aenigmaticus Orchestra (21 pm).

On the 23rd, also in Loulé, but in the village of Penina, near Salir, the artistic installation “Moinhos ao Vento”, by Bertílio Martins, one of the founders of Associação 289, a collective based in Faro which since 2017 has been promoting the Visual Arts in the Algarve.

The installation opens at 19 pm, and features windmills designed by the local community. The event also includes a visit and a workshop on windmills, for primary school students.

On the 27th of May, in Loulé, Fonte Benémola hosts an interpretive tour, with special emphasis on insects and their importance in ecosystems. The tour, entitled “Flower yes, flower no, an insect… or maybe not!”, starts at 9:30 am, lasting 2 and a half hours. Entries must be made via email [email protected]. The tour is limited to 15 people and recommended for ages 6 and up.

Also on the 27th, but in Albufeira, in Paderne, there is another pedestrian walk, this one with a performance, called “A Alma do Espaço”, run by Associação Soul.

The tour includes choreographic performances, exploring spaces, movement, dance and creativity. “A Alma do Espaço” starts at 9 am, with a meeting point under the A30 viaduct, next to Paderne Castle (and repeats on June 22), a distance of 3 kms and duration of 1,5 minutes. The maximum number of participants is 90 (registrations at: [email protected]).

On the 30th of May, we return to Benémola, for the inauguration of the artistic installation “What if Don Quixote passed by…”, by Gustavo Jesus. The event opens at 19 pm and includes mediation work with students from the Visual Arts course at the University of Algarve.

On the 2nd of June there is a concert in Albufeira, in Paderne. It's “Purple Day”, by Mateus Verde, at 21 pm, on Rua Miguel Bombarda.

On the 4th of June, the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Sovereign Mother) will host “The Writer Bird”, a show aimed at children and families by the Cultural and Environmental Association-Figo Lampo, at 11:00 am.

From the 6th, you can visit the interactive art installation “Sons do Chão”, by Mateus Verde. “Sons do Chão” integrates materials collected in the forest and transformed into musical instruments. The installation, located at Moinho do Leitão, in Paderne, can be visited from Tuesday to Friday, from 3:6 am to 10:00 pm and Saturdays and Sundays between 13:00 am and 10:00 pm and from 13:00 pm to 14:00 pm.

On the 9th of June, in Alte, at the Cândido Guerreiro Professional School, there will be a cinema, between 14 pm and 30 pm, with the presentation of short films by students who participated in the CineKids Workshop, from Professional Multimedia courses at Loulé Secondary Schools, Dr. . Laura Ayres and Esc. Professional Cândido Guerreiro. There will also be the final presentation of the Poetry Slam event, by the students who participated in the workshop “From texts to the microphone”, included in the Festival.

On the 10th of June, in Querença, Loulé, there is a performance in the Dance area. It is called “Take me to heaven”, by ArQuente-Associação Cultural, to be seen at 20 pm.

This show includes work with the community of the small village of Querença, who will then participate in the show (registrations at [email protected], maximum of 10 people), as well as a dance workshop for EB1 students in Querença ( on the 24th of May).

The following day, the 11th, there is a concert in Salir, Loulé, with Luís Galrito. It is called “Us and others”, to be seen and heard at 21:30.

Also on the 11th, “Interferes”, a research and choreographic creation workshop, authored by Ana Borges, begins. The work takes place in the village of Tôr, in Loulé, and ends on the 17th (registrations [email protected], maximum of 15 people).

Ana Borges embraces the relationship between dance and unconventional spaces, following an aesthetic linked to the American dance movements of the 60s and 70s. XX. The workshop is thus designing a choreographic structure that results in a final performance, on the 18th of June, which will take place at Ponte Medieval da Tôr.

On the same day, re-edition of the performance “The Writer Bird”, by the Figo Lampo Association. To see and hear at the Church of Barranco do Velho, in Loulé. It's on the 11th, at 11:00 am.

On June 17th, in Silves, at Moinho do Rodete, at 21 pm, there is space for an incredible concert that brings together – once again – Vítor Bacalhau and Ricardo Martins, who in 30 played together in a quarry in Silves.

The 17th is also a party day in Loulé, more specifically in Aldeia da Penina. It is the reissue of Penina em Festa, a whole day of activities in which the small village comes alive. The program starts at 9:00 am, with walks, and also includes workshops on how to make craft beer or ride a horse, among others, as well as exhibitions, street entertainment and concerts, with two bands to remember, In Versus and Urze de Lume , starting at 21:30.

On the 18th, at 19 pm, Ana Borges presents Performance Interferes_vol.00 [Ponte Medieval da Tôr_Loulé], a dance event with the participation of the local community that takes place in the open air, in the middle of the river next to Ponte da Tôr.

Also on the 18th, and still in Loulé, but in Varjota, there is a hike in the fresh air, at 8 am, with a geological route in the Campos de Lapiás da Varjota.

The tour, with a duration of 3 and a half hours, and a total distance of 8 kilometres, requires registration, via the email [email protected].

On the 24th of June, a Saturday, the municipality of Silves hosts a concert by João Frade with the Aenigmaticus Orchestra. This time, the accordionist and his band play in São Marcos da Serra, in Largo da Igreja, at 21:00.

It is also in Silves, in the former Muslim capital of the Algarve, that, in the magical atmosphere of the Castle, Geopalcos 2023 closes, on the 29th of June, with the Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve, in an event that resumes Sunset Secrets, in which the saxophonist Luís Miguel will present “Time Wheel Trio”.
