Elísio Donas, musician of Ornatos Violeta, died in Olhão

Alongside Ornatos Violeta, Elísio Donas has also toured with GNR, Jimmy P, Per7ume and Susana Félix and recorded with Sérgio Godinho

Portuguese musician Elísio Donas, from Ornatos Violeta, died this Sunday, May 28, in Olhão, aged 48, following a sudden illness, the band's agent Artur Figueiredo told Lusa today.

Elísio Donas, producer and instrumentalist, was a keyboardist in Ornatos Violeta, founded in 1991, in Porto, alongside Manel Cruz (voice), Peixe (guitar), Nuno Prata (bass) and Kinorm (drums).

With them he recorded the albums “Cão!” (1997) and “The Monster Needs Friends” (1999).

The musician also had a project in his own name, entitled Gato Morto, through which he was preparing a first album, with the participation of several guests, such as Dana Colley (from Morphine), Miguel Lestre, Inês Sousa, Vicente Palma, António Bento , Viviane, Emmy Curl and João Cabrita.

In an interview with the Lusa agency, in October 2020, Elísio Donas said that Gato Morto was a «life project», an «artistic collective more than a band».

«I thought it was a funny name, with all the emotional charge of such a strange and black name», he said.

Alongside Ornatos Violeta, Elísio Donas also toured with GNR, Jimmy P, Per7ume and Susana Félix and recorded with Sérgio Godinho.

One of the last concerts by Elísio Donas was earlier this month, with Ornatos Violeta, at Queima das Fitas in Porto, with no further dates confirmed for the band.
