Consolidation of the coastline among objectives of the Algarve Regional Planning Program

Conversion of the plan into a regional program for the Algarve also includes concerns with territorial equity, the connection between the coast and the interior and the reduction of socioeconomic inequalities

The consolidation of the Algarve coastline system is one of the objectives of the new Algarve Regional Planning Program (PROT), which comes into force on Thursday, May 4, according to a resolution published today in Diário da República.

The resolution, approved on the 20th of April by the Council of Ministers and which also covers the regions of Lisbon, Oeste and Vale do Tejo and Alentejo, aims to convert the regional land use plans produced in the first decade of the XNUMXst century into programs that reflect the new social and economic realities.

The measure aims to "ensure that the instruments are up to date in the face of intense social transformation and the challenges of the future, particularly with regard to climate change", to "allow each of the regions where the Coordination and Regional Development Commissions intervene to have a program concerted strategy, capable of supporting the great territorial options».

The resolution published today sets out the objectives of the Algarve Regional Land Management Programme, namely, «promoting the preservation of ecosystems, natural resources and the landscape» or «consolidating the coastal system defined in the PROT Algarve, given the high ecological sensitivity and vulnerability of the coastal zone' of the region.

Among the objectives are also the sustainable use of resources for economic growth, the improvement of ways and quality of life and employment or the attraction and establishment of communities in rural areas.

«Consolidate the coastal system defined in PROT Algarve, given the high ecological sensitivity and vulnerability of the coastal zone, in a strip of territory where most of the large urban agglomerations in the Algarve are located, and where motor economic activities are concentrated of regional development", is one of the objectives of the new program.

The program will also seek to "promote decarbonisation, energy transition – namely, in the fields of mobility, renewable energies and energy efficiency -, and foster a circular economy, in line with the aims of the European Ecological Pact".

Creating a balanced territorial model and «fostering regional connectivity by promoting intermodality and reinforcing the integration of accessibility and mobility networks, intra and inter-regional» are also foreseen goals.

The conversion of the plan into a regional program for the Algarve also includes concerns about territorial equity, the connection between the coast and the interior and the reduction of socioeconomic inequalities in the four terrestrial territorial units of the region (Litoral Sul and Barrocal, Costa Vicentina, Baixo Guadiana and Serra) , continues the document.

The Algarve program should also "improve governance and cross-border cooperation" and "develop increased efforts in implementing broader cooperation models" to enhance "complementarities" in the areas of "business economics", "infrastructures and public services" and in the “enhancement of natural capital and cultural heritage”.
